"Will you save all the poor, even if they are very sick?"

Hi again!

Last week I told you about an abandoned, 15-days-old baby who was dying.  When we were contacted about the baby, we learned that the authorities knew who the parents were. This meant we needed authorization from the parents in order to help the baby, but despite much effort, they couldn’t be located.  Lydia, a CA staff member, pleaded with us to pray.  The next day, her first phone call found the father, Yuen, who agreed to travel 12 hours to meet us!

Beijing Children’s Hospital is always booked out, but we started raising money for the surgery. Children’s Hope Welfare Committee agreed to give RMB $10,000. Two adoptive couples who were in Xining at that time graciously gave another HK$15,000! The hospital agreed to give us a bed and we purchased tickets to Beijing.  The baby was on a drip, and then he developed Oesophagel Atresia.  Phlegm had to be sucked out of his lungs every half hour so he could breathe. Mucous extraction machines are prohibited on aircraft, so Lydia located a pedal operated machine just three hours before the flight.

After the father finally arrived, our flight was delayed two hours! The baby’s face darkened, and we gave him oxygen. He would never be allowed on the plane in this condition, and Xining Hospital didn’t have the equipment to treat him. They suggested the father should care for him at home until he died. We prayed and cried.

I told Yuen that if it was easier for him, the orphanage could care for the baby till he died.  Surprisingly, Yuen said he would take the baby to Beijing by train! There seemed to be no hope the baby would survive, but we paid for Yuen and our colleague, Miss Guo, to take the baby by train. I remembered words from the Bible:  "Because you did it to the least of these my brothers, you did it to me." Lydia and I, crying at times, flew ahead to Beijing to prepare everything.

Amazingly, when the train arrived at Lanzhou station, the baby improved because it's much closer to sea level than Qinghai! More miracles followed: Beijing traffic is congested, but the journey to the hospital was unhindered.  Doctors in China don’t work on weekends or do overtime on weekdays, but the doctor-in-charge performed the surgery the same day – working over-time!  He asked us, "Will you save all the poor even they if they are very sick?"  I replied, "The Bible does not ask us to choose who we will serve; God loves everyone, and He loves you too!".

Actually, as I told you last week, I'm serving on the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference because of God's love for the poor.  This is why millions of poor farmers and herdsmen like this infant's parents are now more aware that they can access the government's medical help.

On July 29, 12 days after the baby had been abandoned I saw his father smile for the first time.  His only son was out of danger!  My husband Marlon, and son, Danial were there and witnessed this miracle with me, so Marlon gave the baby a name:  "En-Ze" which means God’s grace is on him.

Thanks to your support we will continue helping the poor to save their babies!
