Building A Better Hong Kong

Even though I am Chinese, the Malaysian education system did not encourage learning to read and write the language when I was growing up. Now the demands of running an agency like Christian Action have left me very little time for language study, so I have a deep level of respect for those who really strive to learn the language. Maswa is one of those people.

Use As Needed...

In the early 90's, when I started working as Executive Director of Hong Kong Christian Aid to Refugees (as we were known then), I thought I was going to gently lay the organisation to rest, because after all, the Vietnamese refugees were leaving Hong Kong and our services were no longer needed, right? Wrong!

When a little thing means a LOT!

The devastation and heartbreak caused by an earthquake is something most of us will never experience, so this week I took our whole management team to see the movie Aftershock, because CA is involved in an earthquake-prone area.  The film about the 1976 Tang Shan earthquake was made in mainland China, and the collapsing buildings reminded me not only of the Yushu earthquake, but also of the block of flats that collapsed earlier this year in Hong Kong.  I think it’s ironic that sometimes we learn the best lessons in the midst of great devastation.

SHINEing for Rita!

Many Nepalese, Pakistani and Indian families encounter immense integration and segregation problems in Hong Kong, especially those who have recently arrived. We want to do as much as we can to bring about harmony in our society, so Christian Action recently opened a new centre to serve ethnic minorities. We have called it SHINE, which stands for Services for Harmonious Integration and Neighbourhood Empowerment.
