A Surgeon in the Making

Tam Kwong Ho, a graduate of the seventh batch of On Tai Service Centre’s Child Development Fund (CDF). From a young age, his parents instilled in him a deep appreciation for education. He is a model student with a burning passion to become a doctor. Throughout secondary school, he immersed himself completely in his studies—so committed that his bookshelves are lined not with comic books, but with volumes on anatomy, physiology, and human biology.

There were times when Kwong Ho felt confused about his journey of exploration and learning. Fortunately, Kwong Ho learnt to set various short-term goals for himself and gradually achieved them thanks to the encouragement and support from Christian Action, his family, and his mentor. His assigned mentor, Dicky Wong, a devoted social worker at On Tai, recommends Kwong Ho apply for the CASE Scholarship. His mentor motivated him to diligently strive for the necessary outcomes to secure his university admission.

Who Will Be Hong Kong’s Next Models of Love and Justice?

Despite the threat of heavy rain, 1,000 volunteers and participants were jumping with excitement at the Clearwater Bay Golf & Country Club for this year’s 3-Legged Easter Island Adventure on the 12th of April 2025. Although everyone came prepared with raincoats and umbrellas, God granted us clear skies and a day filled with fun, games, and laughter. More than just an adventure, the event carried a deeper purpose — raising funds for underprivileged families, the elderly, ethnic minorities, orphans, and children with disabilities. And unlike traditional fundraising events, this was a day to celebrate, connect, and make a difference—proving that doing good can also be wickedly joyful and uplifting!

At the kick-off ceremony, I stood alongside six Caring Ambassadors—Mr. Kimman Wong, Ms. Mei Ni Cheung, Ms. Pamela Cheung, Ms. Icy Wong, Ms. Ophelia Chung, Mr. Yeung Chiu Hoi and Ms. Inez Leong, the Clearwater Bay Golf & Country Club’s Wellness Ambassador. The atmosphere was electric, with fans cheering for their beloved pop artists, and when we declared, “Let the adventure begin!”, excitement filled the air.

The Unbeatable Spirit

I got started in this line of work in 1987 when I was a young, idealistic project in charge. While Hong Kong grappled with a sustainable solution to the tens of thousands of refugees who were arriving from Vietnam, my role was to teach them professional skills so that they could get jobs. What I quickly learned during those exciting and often chaotic years became the foundation for everything Christian Action (CA) does today and helped propel us to become one of Hong Kong’s largest training and retraining organizations!

John’s Harrowing Story

Please, please read and share - John (alias), fled persecution in his home country thirteen years ago. He arrived in Hong Kong stateless and hoping and praying that a western country would give him a chance to have a new life.

Hong Kong has more than 15,000 foreigners who are seeking asylum and survival in this expensive city is not easy. Life as a refugee has been a daily struggle for John, his wife and four young children, all of who do not have any formal, migrant status. Still, John has been lucky that the Immigration Department did grant him permission to work. John’s small salary allows them to afford a tiny apartment.

The Day I Met Pope Francis

The world mourned for Pope Francis’ passing into glory on 21st April 2025. World leaders and Christian communities paid tribute to this compassionate, humble, and transformative figure whose unwavering commitment to social justice touched us all.

My thoughts turned to gratitude—for his life and for the unforgettable moment Marlon and I were blessed to spend with him. It was during our third ecumenical trip to Europe last May, a journey that marked the 70th anniversary of Hong Kong Christian Council, that we had the privilege of meeting Pope Francis.
