Remembering The Heroes from the 2025 Tai Po Fire

November 26, 2025 will forever be remembered as one of the darkest in Hong Kong’s history. On that fateful day 168 people lost their lives and about 2,000 families were made homeless by fast moving flames. But in the midst of the chaos and tragedy were scores of Indonesian migrant domestic workers who performed heroic acts in order to save the lives of their charges.

On January 18, 2026, with the support from the Indonesian Consulate General, the Hong Kong Fire Department, doctors, and volunteer counselors, we gathered with some of the migrant domestic workers who had been most affected by the fire. We continued to provide services to help them heal.

During the event I had the honour of hearing how courageous many of these Indonesian domestic workers were. This included Mira (alias), who saw the flames and phoned her employer, at his work and then immediately helped his grandma flee. Similarly another carer heard sirens and screams, and quickly scooped up her employer’s 16‑month‑old baby then fled to safety.

Christian Action has had the honor of serving Indonesian migrant domestic workers since 1993 and it has been heartening to now see Hong Kong editorials that praise them for their selfless actions. At this event there was both laughter and tears. I gave all the ladies a blessing bag and also let them know that they will never walk alone - as God is with us, so we are with them!
