Service Awards from HK Government!

Day after day we serve those who desperately need help. Our reward comes when we see them gain hope and then move forward to begin fulfilling the potential to live fruitful lives that God has placed within us. Most of us don’t expect a pat on the back from anyone – we just get on and do the work of serving others!  So it comes as a surprise when you find that your service has not only been noticed, but has been awarded by the Government!

An Important Question!

In last week's blog I mentioned that a medical team that had recently visited our Children's Homes in Qinghai. The BridgeLives Team provided training for our medical and care-giving staff as well as examinations for many of our children including several who have just come out from the Yushu earthquake area. We welcome one of the leaders of that team - Kerry Schottelkorb - to share some thoughts about the trip.

Permanent Secretary for Home Affairs is impressed!

Last week I told you about being grateful for several things that happened, but there was no space to tell you about one more thing – actually one person for whom I am extremely grateful. Mrs Carrie Yau Tsang Ka-lai, one of Hong Kong’s most outstanding Permanent Secretaries, has encouraged and mentored me over several decades (initially as a CA Board member) and recently came with me to Qinghai.  She travelled for many bone-jarring hours to get to our projects without complaint!

A Week To Be Grateful!

It's been a very busy week, but the care of Zhuo Ma, who I told you about last week, must top the list of things for which I'm grateful.  During a scheduled visit to Qinghai, I was able to visit her and also meet with officials from Qinghai Provincial Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and the provincial Civil Affairs Department, who kindly listened to my request, on Zhuo Ma's behalf, for help with her medical condition, even though she was not a victim of the Yushu earthquake.

PRAY FOR ZHUO MA – and for us!

Dai Ji Zhuo Ma is not in one of the orphanages co-managed by Christian Action, but we have been asked to help this Tibetan girl from Yushu County.  Zhuo Ma's father deserted his family when she was a year old.  When she was five, her mother gave her to a herdsman for adoption. Three years later, he passed her on to another old herdsman. That poverty-stricken man and his daughter both had mental disabilities. At the age of eight, Zhuo Ma became their carer.

June 17 Update : I have received some queries regarding Zhuo Ma, so here is an update for her. She was referred to us by a Buddhist organisation and we're glad to help. Zhuo Ma is now in the Red Cross Hospital, and her condition has improved.  While the medical costs are high, she desperately needs this life-saving care.
