Helping a different religion

As we continue to see scenes of the terrible tragedy in Japan, I'm reminded that it will be a year on April 14th since the catastrophic earthquake took thousands of lives and destroyed much of the infrastructure in Yushu County on the Tibetan Plateau.

We are always concerned about the ongoing welfare of the people after a disaster, so CA's Programme Officer and two local staff went back to visit some of the most remote and forgotten communities that we had helped before. Aid didn't stretch that far after the earthquake, so we wanted to make sure that these people are still cared for, and also to assess the quality of the donated aid items after months of hard use.

We were surprised by their reaction to our help.

What about Needy Children in HK?

My mind is often focused on hundreds of orphans and disabled children needing care on the Tibetan Plateau, so today let me tell you a little about what we’re doing for one particular group of needy children in Hong Kong.  These are children who arrive here with uneducated parents who have no home, no income, no extended family, and little or no knowledge of the languages spoken here. One such child is 14-year-old Man Yee, who came here from Mainland China with her parents.

From Sadness to Smiles

On February 2, 2010 I wrote this to you about a heroic mother and her child: "Jun Jun, who has cerebral palsy, is now having seizures incessantly and has lost all her appetite.  She is on maximum medication and therapists can't work on her because she screams in pain when her limbs are moved.  Her mother is distraught at the thought of losing the only person she loves. Her service to her child has been truly Christlike. I promised to get a second opinion on what can be done for her.  She will be seeing a Swiss doctor in Xining this week."

Shanna goes to school!

Remember Shanna? You generously helped us to pay for two lots of surgery and two hearing implants for this beautiful orphaned child about two years ago. Shanna was then adopted by loving parents in the U.S who have kept us up to date with her progress.  The latest news is particularly good.

A 10-year-old’s biography!

One of our adopted children has sent me her very moving and honest biography. I'd love to share the whole thing with you, but I'm conscious of taking up your time, so here's a slightly abridged version of 'My Life' by Lulu.
