Living the Dream

Alice is no different to many a teenager whose family has faced a financial crisis. But the fact that she is now on the way to achieving her dream job is entirely because of people like you who have supported Christian Action's Child Development Fund.

You have helped to successfully change a young woman's future humdrum working life into something she only dreamed about before she came to us.

Piano lessons were a weekly event during Alice's early years, and she felt a strong affinity for the performing arts. But when her father lost his managerial position, the family was forced to rely on government support to make ends meet. Because Hong Kong is a major financial hub, Alice thought she should forget the performing arts and settle for a career in the field of business.

But then she joined our Child Development Fund (CDF) programme. Thankfully, our programme does exactly what its title suggests: it aims to develop a child to his or her full potential. To achieve this each child is matched with a mentor.

Alice quickly formed a strong relationship with her mentor. When her love for theatre emerged, her mentor convinced Alice that she should aim for a career in the arts. By the time she had completed the CDF programme, Alice had successfully enrolled to study to be a stage technician at Hong Kong's Academy for Performing Arts (APA).

She has continued to pursue her interests in piano, primarily so that she can supplement her career in theatre by teaching music. She has also learnt to play the keyboard and guitar, and is now part of a band, the Big Kids, as a backing vocalist. The band, initially formed to perform at an event called Rock the Road, wrote their own song which earned band members the 'Best Composer' and 'Best Base Guitarist' accolades.

Thank you for supporting us as we make it possible for Alice and those like her to fulfill their dream careers.
