A Refugee Advocates for Refugees

I recently met Raya when I visited the Centre for Refugees (CFR). She had survived the Rwandan genocide, which took the lives of her family and friends. She had suffered political persecution in her home country before seeking refuge. She arrived in Hong Kong nine years ago. Raya is a recent staff member of our newly renovated CFR!

Despite all the difficulties of discrimination and stigmatisation that Raya had faced as an African refugee, she is positive, loving and headstrong. She is now a vital leader of the Women’s Group and Community Outreach team. Since 2013, she has given talks about the refugee experience. Her eight years of experience as a CFR volunteer is invaluable. Raya is the perfect fit for this staff position.

Disinfecting Subdivided Homes

Earlier this year, Ah Ping worried that her husband would contract Covid-19 from his job at a high-risk construction site and infect their home. The Wongs live in a cubicle apartment, which is a tiny unit shared by two to three families. Each family sleeps in one bedroom and they use common spaces of the living room, kitchen and toilet with the other families. As a full-time mom taking care of her 6 and 3-year-old sons, Ah Ping feared her family and home were in danger of becoming Hong Kong’s next Covid-19 epicentre. She was so afraid for her family’s health in their cramped living conditions that she almost asked her husband to stop working at the construction site!

The Values that Motivate Us

In my 34 years of work and service in Christian Action, I have met many diligent and kind staff members who have whole-heartedly helped our beneficiaries and the community. Cathy is one of our faithful colleagues. Since 2000, she has devoted herself to Christian Action and the people we serve.

Recently, after 21 years of working in our ERB Vocational Training Department, Cathy reached retirement age. She provided administrative support by liaising with tutors and arranging different training classes.

A Parable of the Mooncake Talents

Three years ago, by the grace of God, my good friend, Dr. Charmaine Tse, who is also Christian Action's advisor, invited Ms. Jennie Chen to support CA’s work. Since then, we have spent much time discussing ways to champion important CA ministries in HK and Qinghai. As Mid-Autumn Festival is at hand, we took this opportunity to bless the less fortunate families in HK as well as to raise funds for CA’s Season of Love Charity Drive.

It is God’s blessing that Charmaine’s family owns Tai Tung Bakery, one of HK’s most famous traditional bakeries. Apart from a mooncake fund-raising campaign, Charmaine suggested to gift mooncakes to under-privileged families, showing them the love of Christ in action. She shared this charity vision with her father and he immediately agreed to donate 300 mooncakes and subsidise over 3,000 more.

Thank You, Lydia!

What started out as a mistake turned out to be the beginning of Lydia’s lifelong devotion to our Qinghai programme.

In 2001, Lydia prepared to set off for Nanning to support women with AIDS. However, she confused Nanning with Xining, so she ended up in Xining. She was welcomed with enthusiasm and hospitality. So began her incredible new journey!
