Love Makes a Difference

Twenty years ago, a cute four-year-old girl from Xining Children's Home met her new parents for the first time. They had come from Cleveland Ohio to Xining. Since then, that little girl has grown into a beautiful young lady! She has been given love and care from her new parents and siblings - and their connection has been blest by God.

Meizi, or Esther Kershaw, was the first child from Xining Children’s Home to be adopted. She is a wonderful example of God’s grace. I have been sharing her updated story in this blog over the years, because I am encouraged by her journey, and I know you will also be encouraged.

1,500 Jobs for 700 Job Seekers!

The year-long COVID pandemic has not only robbed people of time with loved ones, it has also boosted the unemployment rate to 7.2 per cent. February saw the highest levels since 2004, at the height of SARS.

On 25 March, Christian Action revived our annual Job Fair at the Kwun Tong Community Centre. We offered 1,500 part-time and full time positions in restaurants, logistics, retail, aesthetics, healthcare and more. Salaries were as high as HK$25,000 for full-time and HK$95/hour for part-time employees! We welcomed those with a Primary Six-or-above education. Over 15 organisations conducted on-site interviews and recruitment. More than a few visitors who found jobs on the spot went home smiling!

A Harvest of Happiness

“Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labour.” (Ecclesiastes 4:9)

The above Bible verse pretty much sums up the journey of our partnership with the Employees Retraining Board (ERB) over the past 27 years, where we join hands to help pull people out of unemployment or under-employment, and transform the lives of the helpless. I was excited to learn that three of our trainers have recently been honoured with an award in the ERB Annual Award Presentation Ceremony 2020-21 for their teaching accomplishments.

Love Can Change Lives

“In the past, I was selfish and mean. For example, as a gold card holder, I would file a complaint to the airline company when I saw a silver card holder receiving the same service as I did,” Christian Action volunteer, Angel, explaining how God has changed her heart.

Angel worked in investment banking. Seven years ago, God led her to volunteer as an English tutor and mentor to a tight knit group of boys at our Mong Kok Service Centre. Her investment in their lives has paid dividends in every sphere of their lives.

Living Life to the Fullest

“He is the most curious, confident, and brightest boy you may ever meet. And he is the only person in China who has dared, and cared enough, to correct my bad Mandarin!”

I wrote those words in October, 2010 to describe seven-year-old Caleb. In 2003, he began living in Xining Children’s Home. He positively radiated joy and captured the hearts of everyone with whom he came in contact. Fast forward to 2021: Angie, Caleb’s adoptive Mom in the US, tells me he is now 18 years old and is really flourishing.
