The Freedom Fighters

The International Day for the Eradication of Poverty is observed every year on October 17th. It is a time for renewing our support for the underprivileged with our gifts and our finances.

According to the latest ‘Hong Kong Poverty Situation Report 2020’, which was released by the government at the end of 2021, the number of poor people in Hong Kong in 2020 was 1.65 million. This was a new record high figure. Sadly, the number of children living in poverty reached 274,000 and is rising!

I believe that everyone in marginalised and socially vulnerable communities are capable of reaching their full potential and contributing to society. I believe this because I have seen it happen time and time again. That is the magic that you and I and the entire Christian Action team are privileged to be a part of.

Where The Magic Happens

“When I began my internship with Christian Action I feared that the local Chinese service users wouldn’t want to work with an ethnic minority Social Worker like myself. But to my surprise being an Ethnic Minority has its advantages, as the locals are typically very curious about my cultural background, and this became an easy opening to start a working relationship.

I am very proud of being one of the small but growing number of Ethnic Minority social workers in Hong Kong, and to be able to bring about change for our community.”

- Harry, One of Christian Action’s Social Workers

If you know someone like that please encourage them to read my blog. I write my blog to share the hope and magic that I see in so much of what my team is doing and in those whom we serve.

What Does Justice Look Like?

Although it was difficult and heartbreaking to leave her family behind in Indonesia, Siti left for her new career as a Domestic Helper in Hong Kong with hope for a better future. Little did she know that what was waiting for her was unexpected abuse from her new employers! This escalated week by week, from sleeping on the floor to having household gadgets thrown at her at random, which made her feel powerless and frightened for her life.

Seeking help from her employment agent proved to be futile and left her feeling belittled and deeply disappointed. She did not know who to turn to - when it seemed like a miracle, and her sister introduced her to Christian Action to seek help and protection.
