The Burden of Love

On October 13th 2023, our Lo Kwee Seong On Tai Service Centre screened the heart touching Japanese movie "CareNin – Thank God You Are Here," to assist our service users at On Tai Estate to better understand how to take care of their elderly or mentally ill family members. This film received high praise from Japan's Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare. It is the true story of a young caregiver who learned how to handle the pressure and stress of taking care of an elderly dementia patient. The movie night drew 70 participants; among them were housewives, teenagers, young elders and parents with their children.

At On Tai Estate, many residents are beginning to face the situation of increasing age, yet they find themselves needing to take care of more senior family members at home. Some of them can also encounter the possibility, that their family members may be suffering from dementia. Therefore, we hope to use this movie night to enhance everyone’s understanding of dementia and, at the same time help them to learn how to care for caregivers.

The greatest gift of all is God’s gift of salvation, and the more we focus on this during Advent, the more we should want to serve those who are truly in need.

This Advent I would like to invite you to support the financially or psychological challenged. I am especially thinking of the Carers who serve the sick and aged in their own homes. Oftentimes this is a thankless duty that can physically and emotionally overwhelm Carer to the point of burnout.

Children’s Wellbeing In Sub-Divided Units Is Our Concern

Our Mong Kok Service Centre (MKC) is located in Yau Tsim Mong, which is one of Hong Kong’s poorest and densely populated locations. The buildings are generally very old and there are many “subdivided units,” or “horrible housing” options. Because the units are so cramped, most of the children living in them don’t have even have a desk or dining table to sit at and do their homework. If they’re lucky they may have a small chair, but many have to do their homework in bed.

A Meal Like No Other

“Although having Poon Choi for dinner may not seem like a big deal to you, these children have never had it before, so this special treat means a lot to them.”

DaDa, a social worker from our Mong Kok Center who accompanied the children to the Yau Yat Chuen Garden City Club’s Poon Choi festival.

Legend has it that during the Song Dynasty, when the Mongols invaded China, Emperor Bing and his troops fled to a village in the New Territories region of Hong Kong. The villagers cooked them a delicious dishes with the finest of ingredients, only to discover that they didn’t have enough bowls to serve everyone. Their ingenious solution was to stack the cooked food, layer upon layer, in large wooden wash basins!
